Vancouver's newest green social enterprise, Treehouse Treats, is a project coordinated by three post-secondary students, in partnership with the Environmental Youth Alliance, the Vancouver Fruit Tree Project, and Savoury City Catering.
History
During the summer of 2011, a local catering company committed to sustainable food practices and supporting the community, Savoury City Catering, approached the Vancouver Fruit Tree Project (VFTP) with the idea to take the VFTP's dedication to saving soon-to-be-discarded fruits one step further: creating small fruit pies and selling that at farmers markets throughout the city.
After successful summer sales at the markets and seeing the potential of the new business for development and growth, Savoury City and the VFTP approached the Environmental Youth Aliance (EYA) for support. This in turn led to the recruitment of three post-secondary students, all of whom have focused their education on food, nutrition, and environmental studies, and who were interested in gaining experience in sustainability-focused entrepreneurship.
And so Treehouse Treats was born..
What Do We Do?
We harvest and source produce that would otherwise be discarded, and create revolutionary pastries and treats!
Our mission is to inspired and encourage Vancouverites to reduce food waste, as well as promote and raise awareness on food security issues. We also aim to raise funds for our partner non-profit organizations, which offer educational sustainability programs for inner-city youth and community members..
..all while keeping stomachs happy.
